Most of us have days that feel better and more balanced than others. We should take special note when this happens. Balance is important in our lives because it brings us joy, peace and inner happiness. We need to be aware of days like these and strive to have as many balanced days as possible. Let’s learn what we do to make them happen! On balanced days, we probably ate well, got out and about, and treated ourselves to some form of exercise. We also probably met with meaningful individuals like family, friends, and associates; accomplished our goals for the day; and got a good amount of rest and relaxation. Well, that was my day today.
A Balanced Breakfast
Our breakfast, the most important meal of the day, was honey Greek yogurt mixed with banana and strawberries alongside a bowl of Raisin Bran. We always have fresh coffee and occasionally a glass of orange juice. Since we keep our portion sizes small, it’s not a lot, just varied and complete. This energized me and I instantly posted a pic on instagram and twitter. As we finished up, my son, Tristan, emerged from his room, ready for breakfast himself before heading out for a photoshoot with a client. Because I knew my daughter, Angelique, also would be waking up shortly, I prepared one of their favorites for both of them. It was a hearty and balanced breakfast of pancakes, eggs and turkey hotdog with a banana and strawberry smoothie. Cupcake, our dog, got a little of the breakfast too!
Setting and achieving goals helps balance your life
Gregg and I discussed our goals for the next month and I wrote down what each of us needed to focus on. Feeling organized and good about these, I left Gregg working on updating our daughter’s web page. This was a good time to take Cupcake out for her morning walk. As I strolled through our beautiful neighborhood, with roses, bougainvillea, and a variety of flora along the walk, a clear picture for a new piece of art came to me. I eagerly walked home to begin working on the inspired piece.
Balance through exercise
After painting for a couple of hours I decided to go for a run. Gregg was still immersed in updating the website and I knew that later he and I would be taking a long evening walk, so I did not to disturb him. I wanted to complete my 3-mile course in 30 minutes today since I love to compete with myself. Recently, I had begun running again and had worked my 15-minute-mile runs down to 12-minute miles but I was now ready to push myself further!! I hit a great stride and my mind was buzzing with ideas as I ran. It was clear to me what I wanted my next blog to be about – BALANCE!!! I knew I had to share my thoughts with others while they were fresh in my mind. It was also thrilling to finish my course in just under 30 minutes!
Family time brings balance
When I arrived home, my husband greeted me with a smile and lunch! While I was out running, he was preparing a home-made Bahamian lunch of ham and bean soup with dumplings! What a great husband!! By this time, my son had arrived home from his photoshoot and he joined us for lunch. We like to keep abreast of what is going on in each others’ lives so we chatted about the various projects we are pursuing. After our meal, we each went our own way to work further on our separate projects for the day. Tristan downloaded and edited his photos, Gregg continued website work, and I wrote down some ideas for the next blog before continuing work on my art piece. Angelique was at work at this time so we made a point to leave a plate for her if she wanted it when she got home. After about an hour my husband was ready for some outdoors. I set aside my painting and did a 30-minute, fast-paced walk with him through our neighborhood. We discussed our upcoming trip to our hometown, Nassau, Bahamas, and what we needed to accomplish prior to leaving Los Angeles.
Enjoying life with people who edify you helps balance your life
We worked up a little sweat and arrived back home to prepare dinner for the family. We chatted about our blog and a new business idea Gregg is developing while we finished making dinner. By this time Angelique arrived home, Tristan was finished downloading and editing most of his photos and we were ready to eat dinner. We enjoyed a great meal of steak, corn and rice, sautéed mushrooms, and a salad along with a glass of Black Box Merlot. As we were cleaning up we got an invitation to visit with friends who also live in our complex. We gladly joined them for wine and great conversation in the outdoor courtyard. Our background music soundtrack was oldies by the Eagles. What a great way to end the day!
Balance means being aware of what makes you feel alive
Everyone’s balance is different and the key is to recognize what brings balance to our life – what makes us happy – and strive for it. We must be aware of the days that feel good, take note of what we did differently, and continue to do those things. Making this a daily practice will lead us to:
- Live life to the fullest
- Enjoy the people in our lives
- Enjoy nature
- Figure out what type of exercise we enjoy and do it
- Note what meals make us feel healthy and alive and prepare them
- Enjoy desserts, a glass of wine or bottle of beer in moderation
- Realize who we like to be around, who edifies us, and surround ourselves with those people
The main thing is to just be aware of, and embrace, the things that make us feel balanced and healthy!! What do you think about these ideas and what do you do to bring balance to your life? Leave a comment below and let me know!
