I was an artist before becoming an author. Whenever I want to relax, get away from worries or not think about anything in particular, I paint. I’ve always enjoyed painting mainly because it relaxes me and, therefore, calms my spirit so I can focus on other important issues.
When my husband and I traveled across America, I enjoyed painting scenes from our travels. Also, when I was writing my book, Return to Isle of the Shallows, I regularly needed a break to organize my thoughts. I found that painting helped relieve my writing tensions.
- Improves concentration
- Sharpens fine motor skills
- Good way to relax
- Promotes knowledge of various cultures
- Boosts creativity
- Non-verbal communication skills
- Critical thinking skills
- Improved self confidence
- Gives you a positive mindset
I found all of these to be true for me. While they are true for my painting skills, some are also true for my writing. When writing my book, my concentration level was boosted. I was able to relax and focus on the storyline and characters. My creativity level definitely improved. The act of painting helped me see the locales for my book more vibrantly. Therefore, my descriptions were more beautiful and better thought out than they had been before taking a break to paint. In addition, I had the desire to continue with my writing. My self confidence improved. I had a feeling of trust in what I had written and was eager to share it with others. I felt the quality of my written work had improved in a big part because of my painting breaks.
The beautiful art I created encouraged me and gave me the desire to paint even more than before. It also gave me confidence to sell my art.
The act of painting gave me a positive mindset. Therefore, now whenever I feel down, experience writer’s block, need a break, want to give a special gift and show my appreciation for others, I paint.
Painting gives me a satisfaction like none other. So, I implore you to paint even if it is only as a hobby because it will inevitably also help your health. If you do not paint for the enjoyment of it then, do it for your health. Happy painting!
